How To Get Relief From Back Pain During Pregnancy?

Dr Beena Jeysingh, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood hospital, Bangalore India, speaks about a common complaint of back pain among pregnant women. She has shared tips on managing and reducing the discomfort due to back pain.
Among all the physical and physiological changes that occur during the nine months of pregnancy, one thing that is experienced by almost all the women is ‘back pain’. It can be quite uncomfortable for working women who have to sit or stand for long durations.
Low back pain generally starts somewhere during the second trimester when your back has to support you and the weight of your growing baby bump.
Dr Beena Jeysingh has explained the causes contributing to the back ache and tips on getting relieved from the discomfort.
The body changes that happen during the pregnancy period play a significant role in accommodating the growing uterus, the additional weight and preparing the body for childbirth.
Some of the causes of backache are:
Poor body posture
Added weight
Loosening of the ligaments and joints
Pregnancy-related stress
“A backache comes as a part and parcel of being pregnant. There is nothing that can help you to evade it. But, yes, there are tips and exercises to help you reduce the intensity and make it bearable for you; all of it takes a lot of effort. Following these steps would surely make you feel better,” says Dr Beena Jeysingh.
Tips to minimise a backache:
Practice a good posture. Sit straight in the chair with your back, well supported. Place a cushion at the back of the chair if required.
Wear flat footwears. Avoid heels during your pregnancy.
Do not bend down. Always squat down if you have to.
Sleep on your sides. Place a pillow between your legs to support your back.
Ask your doctor for pregnancy support belt. You can wear one, to ease some pressure off your back.
Rest well, especially towards the end of your pregnancy.
Placing cold or warm compression on the back works well for a nagging pain.
You can apply backache gels or balm for temporary relief.
This back pain usually continues even after delivery. You will have to bear the pain for some time, a small price to pay in return for your bundle of joy!
