Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.

“There’s no pill that’s ever going to take the place of taking care of yourself,” said Dr. Heather Auld, an OB/GYN and integrative medicine physician with Lee Health.

When it comes to how you feel, doctors say you need to consider what you’re eating. “The root cause of all chronic problems is inflammation, and that starts with diet first,” said Dr. Auld.

When patients come in with pain, she first recommends an anti-inflammatory diet. “When we get rid of pain through an anti-inflammatory diet, it also has a snowball effect of decreasing other risks for type two diabetes, cancer, heart disease,” she said.

To get started on an anti-inflammatory diet, patients are encouraged to stay away from processed foods, packaged foods, soda, and fast food. “An anti-inflammatory diet is eating real food. That means eating some wild caught fish, flax seed, chia seed, those are all really high in the omega threes. Those are really important,” Dr. Auld said.

There are many different sources of pain. It could be caused by trauma, chronic inflammation, even stress. “Progressive muscle relation is a really easy technique; massage therapy really helps people relax,” she said.

For joint pain, an injury, or pain after surgery, doctors may recommend cupping. “It’s sort of the opposite of a massage because instead of pushing the tissue together, it separates the tissue layers, increasing the blood flow and allows your body to naturally remove inflammatory processes,” said Dr. Auld.

Depending on the cause and type of pain, integrative medicine health experts may recommend diet changes, massage therapy, cupping, or acupuncture. All can help patients manage and improve their pain.
