Back pain when pregnant is something that a good majority of mothers will experience in their pregnancy! In fact, studies show that anywhere from 50 to 70 percent of women will experience back pain during pregnancy! Back pain is usually benign and will stop after the birth of one’s child.
On the other hand, many expecting mothers ask the question “Why does my belly button hurt?” at least once throughout their pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy belly button pain is something that many expecting mothers experience. Most mothers experience this navel pain during pregnancy in their second and third trimesters. Belly button pain during pregnancy can be caused by a number of different factors, but just as back pain, belly button pain is harmless and will cease to exist after the birth of one’s child.
In the video above, we show how the use of pregnancy tape can help to alleviate back pain and belly button pain! We’ll be demonstrating two different taping techniques: The “Cozy Cradle” and the “Cozy T”
What Causes Back Pain When Pregnant?
During a healthy pregnancy, a woman typically will gain between 25 and 35 pounds. The spine has to support this weight, in addition to the weight it was already carrying, prior to pregnancy. Not only that, but pregnancy causes one’s center of gravity to shift. As the weight of the baby causes additional weight for the belly, the stomach tends to shift this weight forward. This can result in the stomach “hanging”, and/or changes in one’s posture. This can result in back pain, or strain.
Another factor behind experiencing back pain while pregnant, is hormone change. During pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin is produced. This hormone allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and joints to become looser to prepare for the birth process. This same hormone can cause spine supporting ligaments to loosen, potentially leading to instability and pain.
What Causes Belly Button Pain during Pregnancy?
There are many different factors that can cause pregnancy belly button pain . Some of these include a popped belly button, stretching of the stomach, and an umbilical hernia. All of which can result in general uterine pressure.
General uterine pressure is usually the main cause for pregnancy belly button pain. As the fetus inside one’s uterus grows, the uterus, of course, has to grow with it. It ends up expanding beyond its usual position to accommodate the growing fetus. This causes additional pressure to be put on the abdomen and belly button.
A popped belly button usually happens very late in pregnancy. In essence, a popped belly button is nothing more than when an “innie” belly button has protruded outward, due to the added pressure of the uterus and baby. Popped belly buttons don’t happen in every pregnancy.
Stretching of the stomach is pretty much self explanatory. As your baby and uterus grow, your stomach has to stretch to accommodate their larger size.
Treating Lower Back Pain and Belly Button Pain during Pregnancy
Unless you were suffering from chronic back or stomach complications before pregnancy, the pain is likely to gradually subside before giving birth. That being said, there is a potential solution for lower back pain when pregnant, as well as belly button pain during pregnancy..
Pregnancy tape is applied by simply peeling the backing paper off of a strip of the tape, and while applying a little bit of tension, anchoring it to points of the body that need support and rubbing your hand along the tape to warm up and activate the adhesive.
And that’s it! It’s so simple, yet so effective!
